Significant Internet Failure Hits Dozens Websites and Apps
A large-scale online outage has disrupted numerous websites and applications worldwide, with users reporting issues getting online following issues at the web hosting platform.
The disrupted apps include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed operations like its main retail website and the Ring doorbell home security firm.
In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted along with its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with additional accounts of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring device owners used networks to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, reports of issues on specific platforms ran into the tens of thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the US at AWS, a section that provides essential internet backbone for numerous businesses, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the most extensive web hosting system.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8am BST), the company announced “elevated error rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the America. The widespread consequence appeared to affect platforms around the world, and the outage tracking website indicating problems with the same sites in multiple continents.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, additionally noted a rise in problems on Monday morning, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the issues originated.
